Project Runway: Double 0 Fashion

So I don’t want to say that episodes where Leanne wins are the most boring episodes of the season, but that was the case last week, and this week…
An original episode! Really, why start now, in mid-season? Heidi brings out special guest Tim Gunn to inform the group they will be designing for a fashion legend. Leanne is just happy they’re not designing for Tim Gunn, which actually sounds fun. Blayne thinks the fashion legend is Mary Kate Olsen. But, doesn’t a
fashion legend need to be older than a quarter of a century? I mean, I know MK was rocking the duds on Full House, but were they legendary duds? Blayne says he wants to marry MK (“Who doesn’t? Besides Tim Gunn.”) and now we understand why Beatles references mystify.
Instead of Michelle Tanner, the designers meet Diane von Furstenberg. Kenley loves her so much, she actually cries in the moment and in the interview. The challenge: create a look for Diane’s fall collection, inspired by the movie A Foreign Affair. The designers will get to visit Diane’s sample room for fabrics, since Diane is all about the prints. The winning look will be produced and sold exclusively to American Express card members, with part of the proceeds going to charity.
The designers have until midnight. Leanne really wants to win while having immunity and does a beautiful silk gown. Kenley bucks the trend of Diane’s look book by doing only one piece while the rest create at least two. Suede is just focused on what Suede is here to do, and that is Berlin camouflage. Blayne’s goal is something different, not just his usual neon “throw up.” He “likes to show versatility, and not just another pair of the same pants, like somebody else does.” Oh snap! Blayne and Joe accuse Terri of being a “one trick pony,” with her usual pant and coat ensemble. They’re not wrong, but the woman still out designs the two of them.
Joe further turns into a catty 12-year-old when he does the “gag me” motion over Kenley’s dress. I wouldn’t point fingers so much, Joe, considering the pink of that top you chose.
Stella refuses to share her plans with Leanne and Terri, and Keith’s ‘tude from last week seems to have taken root in Stella. Which promises a welcome elimination, if you ask me.
Tim Time. Tim is confused by Suede’s outfit and warns him about the fullness in the hips. He worries about Joe and the time, and is concerned about the yellow in Korto’s dress, but she works her magic on him. He reminds Stella that she needs to be cohesive and Stella thinks Rachel Zoe is a hack. He sees Shanghai in Kenley’s dress, but it could go either way.
The next day, Joe says his look is so polished that it might get lost in all the “crap” that’s going down the runway. Leanne thinks Joe’s outfit is costumey and his confidence misplaced. Well, when Leanne is putting you down, you know you’re in trouble. Kenley is worried for Stella.
Runway! Fern Mallis of IMG Fashion sits in for a missing Nina. Maybe Nina’s job hunting? Diane is the final judge.
Joe: Ugly colors. Leanne: Classy period piece. Terri: More of the same! Jerell: Shiny? Korto: Zebra and yellow. Blayne: Parachute pants, great jacket. Suede: Dress, vest. Stella: Pants, cape, vest. Kenley: Shanghai sheath-like dress.
Safe: Terri, Jerell, Blayne. Suck on that, one trick pony!
Judges: Diane likes the yellow in Korto’s dress, and Fern loves the print. Diane and Heidi love the jacket. Diane and Heidi don’t like the open back of Joe’s top. Kors thinks its not cohesive and it’s a “‘What was she thinking’ from behind.” Heidi thinks Kenley’s is a pretty dress, but safe and not complicated. Kenley out-talks her and says that she wanted to make “the” dress that Diane was missing on the runway. Heidi looks pissed. Diane loves the dress; Fern thinks it’s chic and wearable. Regarding Stella, Diane likes the idea of mixing the tweed with the leather. Unfortunately, the cape is very “Dracula.” Kors says the tailoring “is just not happening….the crotch is every woman’s nightmare.” I’m not making the joke that’s set up here. Diane loves Leanne’s dress and “the yin and the yang” of the women’s dress with the men’s jacket. Fern loves the ruffles on the back. Suede’s dress has too much material around the hips, making it unflattering. Kors says someone wearing that would be like she got “dressed in the dark.”
Deliberation: Kenley was simple, pretty and one more piece would have been a home run. Leanne had a lot of good design there. Korto’s was beautiful. Suede’s was uninteresting, not good enough. Joe was too Shanghai, looked homemade. Stella suffered from poor execution. More Transylvania than Shanghai.
Bring them back out and Leanne wins again! No wonder this episode was so boring. Suede is safe, Stella is pissed, and Joe is worried. And Stella is sent home! No argument here.
Next week: Nina’s back, and someone is pooping fabric!
