Supernatural: Love Song

Sam and Dean roll in to solve this week’s disturbing phenomenon, men who are brainwashed into brutally murdering the women they love. To Dean’s delight, the murders lead them to voluptuous vixens working at a nearby strip joint. But Sam experiences a little romance of his own when he consults a local doctor about what could have caused the men to suddenly become violent. She explains that all men had high levels of a hormone, oxytocin, found in their systems. As the doctor gazes into Sam’s eyes, she explains that oxytocin, incidentally, is the same hormone released when a person first falls in love.
Sam and Dean discover the strippers are sirens, ancient creatures whose mythical songs lead sailors to their deaths. And as we get a visual of one of these creatures in their true form, let’s just say it’s pretty gross. But more surprising than the fact that one of the sirens leads a man to brutally kill his own mother, is that one of the sirens already has its eyes on Sam and Dean. One brother must try to get the other out from the grasp of the siren’s call, while trying to avoid getting slain at the same time.
Oh, things are never easy in Sam and Dean’s world… Aptly named, this week’s episode, Sex and Violence, had enough sex and violence to likely keep up the ratings. And I have to admit, the show has managed to preserve an eerie, X Files-esque sense of macabre that is pleasing to watch. Just when I think we’ve run out of supernatural phenomenon, the show manages to bring out a story as classic as Sam and Dean’s vintage Impala and give it an intense twist. I also can’t help but enjoy the always sarcastic dialogue of the cute and flirtatious brothers who have been to Hell and back-literally.
Season 4, Episode 14: Sex and Violence (originally aired February 5, 2009)
