Crazy, Sexy, Cool Heroes Ball /feat. Joel Madden

Poptimal.com was one of the few media outlets to receive VIP media access to the Sexy! Heroes Ball held at Voyeur Night Club, in the Gaslamp district of San Diego. Check out what Ference, co-host of Poptimal.com’s The Jone Dome, saw, heard, and experienced at what he calls the sexiest, coolest party at Comic-Con.
If you hear the words Comic-Con and you conjure up visions of nerds dressed up like their favorite Naruto character and standing in long Disney-esque lines to fulfill their masturbatory fantasies of meeting Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy) or Erica Cerra (Eureka, The L Word) . . . Or, if instead you imagine a gaggle of Asian teens dressed up as progressively sluttier versions of G.I. Joe’s The Baroness, giggling because they just met Joss Whedon (Buffy, Dollhouse, Serenity) and his Rihannese forehead . . . then, you are only half right about Comic-Con. Well, maybe 75% right.
What you fail to realize is that during this mega convention, San Diego becomes the home of some of the hottest star-studded after parties in the country, where fans get to mingle with some of the coolest celebrities in Hollywood today. Where you have missed out, the nerds/dorks/Chuck viewers are cleaning up and hob-nobbing with the likes of Rebecca Romijn, Samuel Jackson, and a sober Robert Downey, Jr.
Now, I know that I am going to anger some of Poptimal.com’s associates who threw other parties, but without a doubt, Sexy! Heroes Ball hosted by Legendary Press, Rage One, Eventvibe.com and Voyeur was the sexiest, coolest party at Comic-Con. Those who listen to our podcast show The Jone Dome know that Double Edge and I have partied all over the East Coast. In fact, most of our live podcasts are turned into parties themselves. As such, being an aficionado of what makes a good party, I say Bravo to the hosts of the Sexy! Heroes Ball!
Now, here is the rundown.
The event was supposed to start at 8pm with the red carpet picture-fest just inside the VIP entrance into the club. Of course, it did not start on time because we were dealing with celebrities and black people. My life experiences have taught me that combination means that you can add 2 hours to whenever the start time is. I didn’t mind because as soon as we arrived, the club owners sent us upstairs to the VIP section that consisted of 3 VIP rooms, each with their own frighteningly attractive and leather clad bartenders. Of course, I indulged myself . . . in the free drinks . . . not the bartenders.
Like clock-work, the first celebrities arrived around 10pm which was fine because there were not many people on the dance floor. That was until DJ Paul Kalinski (better known as PJ Butta) started to spin a compulsive fusion of East and West coast hip hop. Although the groove lacked the socially conscious lyrics that I am a fan of, there was no doubt his tunes made everyone hit the dance floor in a mad frenzy. . . me included. As soon as PJ Butta started mixing Jay-Z’s tracks from Reasonable Doubt, I could have sworn I was back in a Brooklyn club, only without metal detectors at the door.
It was obvious from the time the first celebrity arrived that the main star of the evening was Joel Madden, member of Good Charlotte. Full disclosure, I went to high school with Joel, Benji, and Paul, and as such, may be a bit biased regarding their level of talent. With that said, Joel rocked the house and had all the party goers mesmerized by the beats he dropped. Madden’s cacophony of bohemian West Coast rhythms kept the crowd on its feet the entire night.
Part of what made the party a huge success was the accessibility and openness of the celebrities in attendance. I know celebrities who are pretentious a-holes . . . heck, I even interviewed a couple during The Con that will remain nameless (initials are E. J. Olmos). Thank the party gods that none of them showed up to this event. At the risk of being fired by the Poptimal.com managers, I must admit that with all that was going on, I missed the order in which some of the celebrities entered.
If you are planning a trip to San Diego, you can’t go wrong with the Voyeur Nightclub. I guarantee you will have a Crazy, Sexy, Cool time.
Here is a quick (non-exhaustive) list of some of the celebrities in attendance.
- Brea Grant (Heroes)
- David H. Lawrence (Heroes)
- Chris Gore (Attack of the Show)
- Kayla Collins (Ms. August 2008, Playboy)
- Sabrina Morris (Star Trek)
- Joe Torry (House Party 3, Caught On Tape)
- Jeremy Jackson (Baywatch, Confessions of a Teen Idol)
- Ruben Chato Hinojosa
- Michael Papajohn (Spider-man, True Blood)
- Joel Madden (Good Charlotte)
Along with the celebrities, make sure you check out Julie Tarabbia and Adrianna Tiarah (Ynigo), they really helped to make the night and kept the party going.
