Valentine’s Day plus Grey’s Anatomy=drama, surprises, and a whole rollercoaster of emotions for the viewer.

The episode opens with Owen and Derek trying to take their ladies out for a romantic Vday dinner, which Meredith and Cristina aren’t thrilled about. However, their plans are interrupted by an emergency at the hospital—patients from a roof collapse at a local restaurant.

Owen continues to ignore Teddy but she finally calls him out by saying, “you are my best friend and now you won’t even look at me.” Owen says that since she told him “I love you,” he feels like he is cheating on Cristina by talking to her. Later, as Owen and Cristina are leaving the hospital, Teddy stops them and tells them she takes back the “I love you.” She wants to be friends with Owen again and to teach Cristina. Owen replies that she can’t “unring the bell” but Teddy remains positive and says “I know but I can try like hell.”

Derek is struggling with his new “chief” responsibilities, talking to reporters and attending fundraisers, rather than performing surgery. April, who he rehired last week, is acting as his assistant and admits that she isn’t sure she can do surgeries anymore. Derek brings her into an emergency brain surgery. They lose the patient and April breaks down again. Derek explains that you need to feel the losses and “I made a mistake last year. I almost walked away. You can be a good surgeon. It’s why I brought you back.”

Chief Shepherd is not the only one having trouble adjusting, Meredith is having issues with being the Chief’s wife and Mrs. Shepherd. She insists that she is a surgeon and will not attend a fundraising breakfast. However, a patient explains marriage is about making choices, which convinces Meredith to attend the breakfast to support Derek.

Ben, the new anesthesiologist asks Bailey out to dinner but she says no. Callie and Arizona overhear and realize that “omg she likes him.” Bailey and Ben are in surgery together on a patient who has a shard of glass in his abdomen. Arizona joins them in the O.R. acting as cupid—she not so subtly talks about restaurants, first dates and how Ben should ask Bailey out again. Bailey finally has enough and kicks Arizona out of the O.R. After almost losing the patient, Ben congratulates Bailey but she announces, “I can’t talk to you. You make me nervous…I like you.” Although she says she acts stupid around him, she agrees to dinner the next night.

Mark asks Callie to help him fix the wobbly crib before Little Sloan returns. However, Little Sloan arrived early looking for the free clinic for an ultrasound. Callie sees her and agrees to perform the ultrasound. Everything is fine with the baby and Sloan wants an official form stating that. Callie doesn’t understand why she needs the form until Sloan admits it is for an adoption attorney, who Mark doesn’t know about. Afterwards, Callie forces Little Sloan to tell Mark about the adoption. Sloan explains that she is not ready to be a mom but Mark surprisingly, with Callie’s help, offers to adopt her baby. Little Sloan isn’t against it and Mark is very excited. However, later Callie catches Little Sloan sneaking out of Mark’s apartment. She admits to Callie that she wants a clean break from the baby, so she won’t give him to them. Callie lets her go. Mark comes home and assumes Callie is fixing the crib but instead she is taking it apart. She tells him to sit down (so she can break the news) but he catches on and looks crushed!

Lexie dyed her hair blonde!! Mark hits on her, thinking she is someone else, which results in a spat and Mark telling her she “can’t pull off blonde.” Lexie’s patient is the dishwasher from the restaurant, whose arm was amputated. She promises him they will do everything they can to save his arm. While repairing the arm, she gets an unlikely pep talk from Jackson. He explains he was the “pretty one” (definitely agree he’s pretty!) in his family of overachievers and they didn’t expect much from him except being pretty. His “point is you can’t just change your hair, you have to actually change.” With his encouragement, she fights to save the patient’s arm; Mark and Owen were willing to leave it amputated. But Lexie convinces them to attach the arm to another part of his body until everything heals so it can be reattached. Lexie decides to keep her blonde hair and ends up having sex with Alex in a supply closet.

Lots of ups and downs throughout the episode. I was happy for Bailey, sad for Mark, disappointed in Little Sloan, pleasantly surprised by Jackson and the list goes on.

Ben and Bailey are in the running for my new favorite couple on the show! Love these two and I wish I could see their first date. In the past two reviews I’ve given Mark a hard time for the way he treated Lexie. But this week, I truly felt bad for how devastated he was and he does deserve some credit for stepping up to the plate to help his daughter.

Way to go Lexie for being assertive but why sleep with Alex again… Although Jackson does have a pretty face, I enjoyed learning more about his background and getting to know his character. Hope this trend continues.

Next Week: Derek brings back the lecture series—Callie, Bailey and Richard discuss important moments that changed them as doctors.

I agree, Ben and Bailey all the way! Although Owen and Christina kind of rock too. Perhaps I’m just hoping that someone will break through Christina’s shell, come on Owen.
This was a hard episode for Mark, which just made me love him more.
