Grey’s Anatomy: Battle of the Surgeons

This week it’s the battle between “old-school,” Richard, who believes in “methodical analysis of scans and careful planning” versus Owen’s “by the seat of his pants” strategy for a challenging surgery. Plus, Mark struggles with dating and Bailey prepares for a third date with Ben.
Richard and Owen compete for a complex surgery on a cancer patient and heated words are exchanged. Derek steps in and tells them both to draw up their own strategies for the surgery, with the help of Cristina or Meredith and he will pick the winner. Cristina volunteers to work with Richard and spy on him for Owen. However, this quickly changes because Richard catches on and offers to let her take part in his surgery. During Derek’s review of the two proposals, he calls Richard’s plan impressive but opts to go with Owen’s. Richard is furious and tells him,
“Let me tell you about your new job. You manage surgeons. Your job is to help them to do what they do, the way they do it, not the way you do it. It takes vision and you don’t have it.”
Ouch! When Owen runs into some trouble during surgery and asks for Richard’s help, Richard doesn’t hesitate and they work together to save the patient.
Mark reveals to Callie that he is lonely and she encourages him to find a “grownup” to date. Teddy and Mark work together for a patient and Callie believes that Teddy would be great for Mark so she pushes him to ask her out. Mark asks Teddy to dinner and she says no but has second thoughts after talking with Arizona, who tells her “Mark is like candy, eat and forget about it.” Teddy then agrees to what she thinks is drinks and sex but Mark wanted to take her to a nice Thai restaurant. An obviously jealous Owen overhears and tells Mark to leave Teddy alone which Meredith witnesses. Later on, Meredith warns Owen, “You were jealous. It took a long time to make Cristina happy and she’s finally happy. And if you mess with that, I will turn on you.”
Mark is a little down that Teddy refused to go to dinner with him, so Callie gives him a pep talk and tells him he is a “good guy worth getting to know.” After watching him in surgery on their patient, Teddy agrees to go to dinner with Mark. However, Mark tells her he will take her to lunch “because I want to build a life and a family and I’m not wasting my time on someone who doesn’t share that interest.” Wow, a mature Mark Sloan!
Throughout, Alex is still skittish around Mark because of how Mark was treating him after he found out Lexie was sleeping with him. Lexie is frustrated that Mark isn’t moving on. However, when Alex tells her that Mark asked Teddy out, Lexie breaks down sobbing on the bathroom floor.
Ben invites Bailey over to his place for dinner, which he will cook. It will be their third date and Bailey begins to freak out after Callie tells her the third date is the “sex date.” For the majority of the time Bailey has it together but this episode she is a mess and worries whether she is cut out for dating. Callie attempts to comfort her by hugging her and reassuring her that she can date. Later that night at Ben’s apartment (which by the way is awesome! I don’t think any of these doctors have ugly apartments), Bailey can no longer take it and announces, “I don’t do things because there is a timeline.” Ben makes Bailey have a conversation and they are on the same page about sex: the “3rd date was a little early.” Bailey asks if he is concerned they will end up just friends. Ben’s response—“I don’t want to be your friend. I have enough friends” and he kisses her. They compliment each other very well!
Callie was the go-to person for relationship advice (for Bailey and Mark) during this episode. She enjoyed her new role giving “sane and healthy advice.” She tells Arizona they are the “stable couple” and can see them “ten years from now with kids.” Arizona’s response, “I’m in it for all but the kids.” Callie looked devastated! So much for Arizona and Callie being the stable couple! My guess is there may be trouble in paradise very soon…
No Sloan and Teddy! I know I sound like a broken record but please put Lexie and Sloan back together! Obviously Lexie’s “not feeling” with Alex isn’t helping too much nor is she over Mark. Here’s another possible twist, I know it’s from left field but Callie and Mark getting together. They both want kids, they are best friends…could be an unconventional family.
Will Richard become Chief again soon or will he remain a surgeon? Curious to see how that will play out and how long they will wait before addressing it.
Did some research yesterday and saw a multitude of new articles on Katherine Heigl which stated that she is definitely done with Grey’s and has already filmed her last episode. She was supposed to report on March 1st, at the end of her maternity leave, for filming and didn’t show up. Goodbye Izzie! I don’t know how much truth there was in the articles but had to share.
Next new Grey’s episode in two weeks (3/25)!
