Project Runway: Oh Me, Oh My, Oh Maya

This week the competition proves to be too much for our dear Maya as she bravely stepped aside because she’s too young, inexperienced, there’s too much pressure, blah, blah, blah, whatever.
Let me remind everyone of my Mila/Maya theory. This only works in my favor for the argument that Mila and Maya are the same person, or more accurately that Mila is the futuristic more wizened Maya who has come to regret this, her biggest mistake. So, present Maya quits the competition and she thinks she’s fine. She’s all full of youthful enthusiasm that lets her brush off this potentially career-making opportunity, only to find ten years down the road that this was a huge error. Forgetting all the scientific specifics, because we’re not that far advanced yet, to the best of my knowledge, Maya decides to return in time and get back to this competition. She calls herself Mila now. This theory now puts us in a time loop that I don’t know how to get out of, but that’s inconvenient so let’s forget that part shall we.
In fact, we’ll forget everything, because Maya leaving is the greatest blessing that we can ask for since now ANTHONY’S BACK!!!!!!! Maya’s leaving makes room for the last eliminated contestant, Anthony. I’m going to go ahead and thank Maya for that. (Thank you! Good Luck!) I’ll hold off on the exaltations because I spent way too much time on Maya, but this is a very, very happy moment for me.
The challenge this week was to create a red carpet look for host Heidi Klum. The designers are all excited about this, of course; because, I mean, it’s Heidi.
In the design room, the designers are surprised to see Heidi along with Tim coming to evaluate their work. This makes sense because as Heidi will be wearing the winning gown/look this insider information could be crucial when it comes to deciding a winner. And while there weren’t any standout pieces, Heidi cautioned a few of the designers: Jay Nicholas on making his model look big and Jonathan on his unfortunate fabric choices. While Jay decided to ignore Heidi’s critique and continue with his pattern, Jonathan decided to scrap his dress. Over the episode Jonathan made three different dresses. This becomes a problem considering the fact that everyone else spent their time focusing on one garment; his divided time may come back to haunt him.
At the runway, the guest judge this week is Jessica Alba.
I wasn’t thrilled with Anthony’s dress upon first glance, it was half black/half white, and reminded me so much of Mila’s color blocking. But when his model walked it flowed really well. I was quite afraid that Anthony would be sent home again. This proved an unnecessary fear as the judges one by one professed their love. (… Okay.) Heidi and Jessica thought that it was beautiful from all angles and Michael thought Anthony was finally in his zone.
Emilio’s dress was glamorous, and as much as it pained me to say this, it looked so sultry with the color and sophisticated in the cut. I loved it. I’m not proud of it. The judges loved it too. Michael called it impeccable and Nina said it looked very expensive. Just for giggles I watched Models of the Runway afterwards and it turns out Emilio’s model played a major role in the design of the dress. In fact, he owes this win to her. So, there you go.
Jay Nicholas’ dress was unfortunate. Made in a weird dirty bone color, Jay kept with his original design that Heidi cautioned would make his model look fat. It made the model look fat. Overall she looked like a dissected fish. All the judges agreed that the model looked heavy, Heidi loved the design of the corset, while Michael thought the corset needed more form.
We can only hope that Jonathan’s two other dresses were better than what walked down the runway. And that it was only a momentary lapse that led to him haphazardly pinning the remainder of his fabric on to his model. His look was sloppy. Jessica loved the draping in the back and Michael thought the model should only show the back of the dress.
Mila’s design was simple. And that’s not quite true as the black and gold patterns were beautifully placed across the back. The front of the dress was boring, and not very elegant. Michael hated the bust of the dress and called the dress very safe; Heidi thought it didn’t stand out.
I would have loved Seth Aaron’s look if it were in a different color, or perhaps if it had any color whatsoever. The gown, made in all black was intriguing yet edgy, but the draping and the color made it look far too heavy and it desperately needed color. Nina found the dress boring and thought that Seth didn’t think of Heidi enough, this latter thought was expressed through all of the judges. Heidi said the dress was missing a WOW effect.
Winning this challenge in yet another double win are Emilio, whose dress will be worn by Heidi, and Anthony, whose gown will be modeled by Jessica at a red carpet event.
Going home this week, Jonathan.
One week until Bryant Park. Who do you think will be the final three?
