As a big fan of animated series, it was a treat to attend the Adult Swim 2010 Comic-Con panel with Jackson Publick, Doc Hammer (The Venture Brothers), Matthew Senreich, Tom Root, and Seth Green (Robot Chicken).
For those who have never heard of these shows, a quick summary:
The Venture Brothers is an animated series following the adventures and misadventures of the Venture family – Dr. Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture, his fraternal twin sons Hank and Dean, and their bodyguards Brock Samson and Sergeant Hatred (season 4). The show parodies The Adventure of Jonny Quest with eccentric and exaggerated characters put in hilarious situations.
Robot Chicken is a series best described as stop motion animation crossed with Saturday Night Live. The show is a series of comedic sketches that parodies people and events in popular culture.
The new season of The Venture Brothers starts on September 12 with the DVD and Blue Ray edition of season four coming out on October 26.
When asked what they thought of the upcoming episodes, creator Publick said, “I think they’re better.”
His cohort Hammer added, “The final word is that they’re better and they’re good. Hatred isn’t going to be talking about how much he likes little boys as much.”
They also promised that there would be more of Brock Samson, who is incidentally voiced by Patrick Warburton from CBS’s Rules of Engagement.
On the Robot Chicken front, the most important news is that the third Star Wars Robot Chicken may be released in December. It is supposed to be more plot-driven and we will see more of Emperor Palpatine.
If you haven’t see the first or second installment of Star Wars Robot Chicken, do it now. If you want to see what it might be like for George Lucas to attend a Star Wars convention or to see what the Emperor really thought of Darth Vader, you’ll go to adultswim.com and watch. And I’m not just saying that because I’m Star Wars fan.
Green (known to me as Oz the werewolf from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) also mentioned that guest voices might include Brian Austin Green (who I will always think of as David Silver from 90210), his lady love Megan Fox, and Kevin Bacon (voicing a Footloose parody perhaps?).
He also debuted a line of Robot Chicken collectible action figures including the robot chicken of course.
Fans of both shows would be thrilled to know that there is a seventy-two percent chance of a crossover! Though Green and Hammer were probably kidding, we can all only hope such an event would actually happen.
You may ask yourself, would animated shows actually be entertaining? The answer is yes. If you are a fan of The Simpsons, Family Guy, or Southpark, give these two series a shot, your viewership will be rewarded!
