Comic-Con 2010: Futurama- The Future’s Never Looked Better

It’s no secret that Futurama is one of my favorite shows and now that it’s back (we can all thank Comedy Central), what new storylines can we expect now that they’re on cable? Show creator Matt Groening and producer David X. Cohen took the time to address this in a recent panel and press room interview at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

My biggest question was how the move from network television to cable would ultimately affect the show.  There has been some speculation of potential censorship by Comedy Central executives, but Groening put that all to rest by saying that the only thing they’ve gotten is a note questioning a word that was intentionally beeped out.

“We receive no censorship notes. We even have an upcoming episode about an overzealous robot who bleeps things he deems offensive, and we got one note that said ‘what is the word that gets censored here, because you can probably say it on Comedy Central,’” he said.

Cohen also adds that twenty-six new episodes have been ordered with six already having aired on the cable network. A bulk of the writing has also been done and we can look forward to seeing new material all the way up to next summer.

Audiences can also anticipate to the guest voices of Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh, and former Vice President Al Gore.

But what about Leela and Fry? Not to worry! Our favorite delivery boy will apparently have many chances to woo his one-eyed love throughout the season.

During the panel, fans were treated to a live script reading featuring cast members John Di Maggio, Billy West, Lauren Tom, Katey Sagal, and Maurice LaMarche. There was also a special Futurama edition of Comic-Con in 3000s and it didn’t look like much had changed.

To show his appreciation, Groening gave away tons of Futurama collectibles to the lucky fans who were able to ask questions.

“The fact that Futurama is back on the air is really attributed to the devotion of the Futurama fans because without their constant chronic support of the show, I think we would have given up awhile ago because Futurama’s been on the precipice of being cancelled – and then actually being cancelled – for a number of times now. So it’s nice to be back,” Groening said.

When asked what it was like to come back to the show, LaMarche perhaps best sums it up: it’s like riding a bike, once you learn you never forget. I’m fairly certain fans feel the same way. It might be on a new channel, but it’s still the same characters and the same quality stories that we’ve come to know and love.

Oh and one more thing, the show just set a Guinness World Record for, “Most critically acclaimed animated series currently on television, Futurama for its 6th season.”

What a great way to be welcomed back!

You can watch all new episodes of Futurama on Comedy Central, Thursdays at 10 p.m.
