Questions were flying around the web. Was it a viral marketing video for a new Mortal Kombat game? Was it a trailer for a new movie? Not much was known at the time. When details finally were revealed, it turned out Tancharoen’s $7,500 short was a fan-made video with no studio backing. And guess what? It paid off.
Yesterday Bloody Disgusting broke the news of Warner Bros. green-lighting Tancharoen’s project by giving the director of Fame a 10-episode web series.
Taking place in an alternate Mortal Kombat universe, Tancharoen grounded the videogame’s fantasy world in a gritty modern day realistic setting. The 10-part web series penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing will also have Michael Jai White returning as Major Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs.
Ian Anthony Dale confirmed with Poptimal today, via Twitter, that he will also be returning to reprise his role as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. The expected cast to appear in the series consists of Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, and Kitana/Mileena.
No specific date has been confirmed regarding the series’ air date, but for nostalgia sake I hope Tancharoen brings back the Mortal Kombat techno mix we’ve all come to love from the original film.
