Mortal Kombat: Rebirth – The Web Series

Last June, Kevin Tancharoen‘s short film based on the Mortal Kombat video game series made its way onto the internet and won the hearts of gamers across the world. Within its first 24 hours on Youtube, the video was closing in on over one million views. Why wouldn’t it, considering the high production values and a cast featuring Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, Matt Mullins, Lateef Crowder, Ian Anthony Dale, Richard Dorton, and James Lew.

Questions were flying around the web. Was it a viral marketing video for a new Mortal Kombat game? Was it a trailer for a new movie? Not much was known at the time. When details finally were revealed, it turned out Tancharoen’s $7,500 short was a fan-made video with no studio backing. And guess what? It paid off.

Yesterday Bloody Disgusting broke the news of Warner Bros. green-lighting Tancharoen’s project by giving the director of Fame a 10-episode web series.

Taking place in an alternate Mortal Kombat universe, Tancharoen grounded the videogame’s fantasy world in a gritty modern day realistic setting. The 10-part web series penned by Tancharoen, Todd Helbing, and Aaron Helbing will also have Michael Jai White returning as Major Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs.

Ian Anthony Dale confirmed with Poptimal today, via Twitter, that he will also be returning to reprise his role as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. The expected cast to appear in the series consists of Shang Tsung, Liu Kang, Sub Zero, Durak, Kabal, and Kitana/Mileena.

No specific date has been confirmed regarding the series’ air date, but for nostalgia sake I hope Tancharoen brings back the Mortal Kombat techno mix we’ve all come to love from the original film.

  1. Mortal Kombat Rebirth will be a bad move for the Mortal Kombat series they should do the material to the games and i think WB thinks they give a shit if these guys will make the series following the story of Jax yeah right.
I”m a MK fan i like the games and I like the first film so if the new MK movie happens in the future it will be good but MK rebirth will just be a series if fans will like it.

  7. The original 3 games were and are still awesome. The first movie met the cheesiness of the gore and brutality in the first games but of course did not live up to the gritty blood soaked action that is prevalent throughout the series. It’s like MK 4 and above were more the graphic speed of the first movies.

I am looking forward to seeing this series even if it isn’t in the classic MK setting. I will be looking at it from the standpoint of someone never seeing the games or movies so that I can judge it more objectively. It is a new concept for the title after all.

Hopefully, one day, they will revamp the original movies and make them in the same graphic style that the Rebirth short film is. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Reptile actually ripping off an opponent’s head and eating it as a fatality? Really, who wouldn’t?

    Anyways, that’s just my opinion.
