MTV Movie Awards: This Show Made Me Want to Get Chocolate Wasted

Where does one even start when trying to write about the MTV Movie Awards?

From the get go, this year’s show was set up as a Twilight versus Harry Potter showdown. Trying to create drama, MTV? Sorry, but Team Potter is above that. I can’t speak for the other team, however, it doesn’t seem your attempts worked (although maybe that’s because Twilight dominated the show).

Jason Sudeikis hosted the event, and I’ll admit I enjoyed his commercials that have been airing on the network where he ran around introducing himself to the various nominees. The opening spoof of The Hangover was also promising and very funny, but then again that may have been because of Justin Bartha‘s awesome presence. Once Sudeikis’ opening monologue began, it all went downhill. It was painfully obvious that nobody was laughing – especially at the Schwarzenegger jokes and Sudeikis didn’t seem to get the hint after the first time.

Has MTV ever considered having an award show without a host? I never see the need for one, and this goes for all award shows. It’s as if these comedians realize this is such a big deal, and want to make sure they don’t fail by overcompensating…but in the end it just all falls to pieces. It’s not career suicide, but these guys need to stick with what they do best (basically anything that involves not hosting an award show).

Below are some of what I would consider “the best” moments from the MTV Movie Awards – and I start with this category because let’s be real, it’s not going to be a very long list:

  • Emma Stone stealing Sudeikis’ own joke with her stony expression. Love this girl.
  • Jim Carrey and his green screen suit.
  • Emma Watson shaking her head during Kristen Stewart’s acceptance speech, summing up everyone’s feelings.
  • Alexys Nycole Sanchez and her cute little speech. Although poor girl must’ve had a chaperone covering her ears the entire show.
  • And of course, classy Reese Witherspoon setting MTV and all of young Hollywood straight with her words of wisdom. The people I respect most in this industry and show my support for are the likes of Emma Stone, Keira Knightley, Emma Watson, Dakota Fanning, and Saoirse Ronan who showcase true talent, and have managed to become successful without a single nude photo/sex tape/drug scandal to be seen.

Now what really didn’t work: everything else.

Part of me wants to blame MTV for facilitating the Robert Pattinson show (and my god, did he make a proper fool of himself), but at the same time I have to accept that this is a fan voted award show. Maybe there’s really not much MTV can do about the fact that teeny bopper fangirls are gluing themselves to the computer screen and voting incessantly for Twilight. We all know which films are quality and which actors and actresses are truly talented. So will I bother watching this show again next year? No. And I don’t even care how many awards Potter may be up for.

Enough of my ramblings, though. What worked and what didn’t work for you? Were you pleased with Sudeikis’ turn as host? And is there really anything MTV can do to not make these award shows so painful to sit through?

just to clarify on my last comment. rpatz and kstew shouldn’t be vilified for being lousy public speakers, nor for being shy. i said they were cringe-worthy but that was because they just don’t speak well in public and look foolish, often. (stoned? perhaps).

i think both are good actors (just an opinion and it’s mine) i just think twilight has become bigger than both of them and being slightly introverted they don’t handle it well.

i could not handle being either of them and reading all the obnoxious comments about myself. alot from people who haven’t even seen the films or read the books. and just hate. (the internet is an evil place at times).

someone said to me twilight was like dawsons creek. erm. no, it’s not.

i’d love to do an anthropological study on NON-twilight fans and what has happened to it’s stars.

i agree, mostly, with your comments. rpatz and kstew are cringe worthy. however, the mtv awards are voted by the people. and, the people voted for twilight.

i shake my head about twilight. i am a fan of the books and have come to like the movies. what i don’t like is the vilification of the film’s stars. they are deemed very ‘not cool’ and loudly on twitter, facebook et al. it’s no wonder they have to get stoned before they appear in public.

    i know i would.

  3. Jennifer, I agree about Lautner. He definitely doesn’t have problems with public speaking and at least seems like a nice guy. Half the time I get the feeling he’s embarrassed by R Pattz and Stewart!

Everyone I’ve talked to agrees with your opinion, the show sucked! That’s putting it lightly. We felt like we were watching a trainwreck, the kind of disaster you have to keep watching just to see what they’re going to do the next. It’s totally obvious the “tween” nation dominated the outcome for this show, but MTV was just as much @ fault. Come on, Robert P. writing a speech for Reese Witherspoon?? WTF! MTV will continue to do what it does best, provide tactless entertainment for the almighty dollar even if it results in an absolute shit show like the awards. Anyone who liked that show would have to be either a pubescent teen who lacks common sense or a Twilight freak!

I think Taylor Lautner should have been the speaker for the Twilight franchise because obviously he’s the only one out of all the acceptance speakers that can speak in public without sounding…. “Awkward”… But I love Emma Watson, she is a beautiful and classy actress!

Too many old people have blogs. You have no idea what’s cool. It’s obvious.
