Psych Q&A: James Roday and Dule Hill Give the Scoop on Season 6

A new season of USA’s hit crime-comedy Psych started on Wednesday with a season premiere that featured Malcolm McDowell. This season is sure to be a good, and I got the inside scoop on it last week during a Q&A session with actors James Roday and Dule Hill.

In previous seasons, Psych has featured a slew of famous guest stars and cleverly themed episodes, a tradition which Roday and Hill said would continue with the sixth season. This season will feature guest stars like Kristy Swanson, Jason Priestley, and Molly Ringwald.

Another guest star the cast was excited to welcome was William Shatner. “The man is – I mean, he’s an icon, obviously – but watching him work was an honor in and of itself,” said Roday. “The man is eighty going on twenty.” In an episode airing sometime in November, Shatner plays the father of Juliet (Maggie Lawson).

Roday and Hill also mentioned a superhero themed episode that will feature Joey McIntyre. Get ready, NKOTB fans!

As for some theme-episodes this season, Roday and Hill said fans can expect to see Indiana JonesThe Hangover, and The Shining.  But perhaps one of the most anticipated episodes of the season is this year’s Halloween episode, “This Episode Sucks,” which will sport a vampire theme and feature vampire movie alums Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys).

Both actors said that, in the future, they’d like to do a musical episode, but we’ll have to wait a while for that one. “It’s tricky,” said Roday. “It’s not something you can throw together.”

Fans can also expect the show’s signature slew of eighties references to continue this season. Though, during the Q&A, Hill admitted that he doesn’t always understand these references and that, half the time, he has to ask Roday what his character, Gus, is talking about.  “But I do like the pineapples, though!” Hill said, referring to the hidden pineapple in every episode, another Psych tradition that will continue this season.

As for the end of this season, Roday promised that the season finale will have a shocking ending that he hopes leaves fans wanting more.

Roday and Hill also talked about their dream crossover – as in, which shows they’d most want to do a crossover with on Psych.  “I would want to do White Collar,” said Hill, who also said his dream crossovers would include Monk and Modern Family. For his part, Roday’s crossover fantasy would be with AMC’s The Walking Dead, since the show is “overdue for a Zombie episode.”

One thing’s for sure, audiences can expect some pretty great material from this season of Psych, from guest stars to themes to pineapples galore!
