The Vampire Diaries Review: Bonnie is Back But Things Are Still Awful

Yes, its true. After being mysteriously absent for the first three episodes of season three, everyone’s favorite witch, Bonnie (Kat Graham), returned to Mystic Falls and found everything as effed up as usual. She is naturally not surprised.
The biggest reward of her return is obviously her reunion with boyfriend Jeremy who seriously gets hotter with each passing episode. How is this possible? Someone please tell me.
Hot though he may be, he also happens to be haunted by his ex-girlfriends, which is kind of a downgrade. In this particular episode it was Anna (Malese Jow) who was connecting with him from the other side and from her we learn that its not just a one-way street. Turns out Jeremy has to want to see her just as much as she does him. You can imagine how hard this might be to explain to his current girlfriend so instead of coping with it he sort of banishes Anna and then comes clean to Bonnie about what he’s been experiencing since she brought him back from the dead last season.
But that’s not all Bonnie is tasked with upon her return to town. We learned last week that Elena’s necklace is actually a magic relic from an original witch that Klaus needs to figure out why he isn’t able to make more half-breeds. Klaus believed his comatose sister, Rebecca, had possession of the necklace so he revived her only to have both of them realize it was missing. Stefan of course knew right away that it was around Elena’s neck and if Klaus found it, the whole ploy of Elena’s faked death would be ruined.
Klaus sets his witch friend Gloria to find it and thanks to Elena and Bonnie touching she starts to get some clues. At one point the damn thing burns into Elena’s flesh and then when Bonnie tries to investigate it further, all of her witch books burst into flame. Do you think it occurred to any of them to throw it away? Pretty sure I would.
Anywho, Gloria figures out pretty quickly that Stefan knows more than he is letting on about the necklace but instead of ratting on him to Klaus she decides to torture him in ancient witch fashion like the classy old dame that she is! Her technique was pretty harsh but sure enough, within moments she figures out everything between Stefan and Elena including their ruse with Klaus. But before old Gloria can put the information to good use, Katherine zooms in and stabs her in the throat.
God, I love that feisty bitch.
You may recall the show teasing Katherine’s arrival in Chicago last week and in this go around we learn that she is there to offer her services to Stefan to take down Klaus. Stefan doesn’t trust her though (fair enough) and sends her packing to handle Klaus on his own. This strategy succeeds for approximately five minutes as Rebecca immediately susses out that he is lying about something causing Klaus to pounce and take Stefan all the way back to Mystic Falls to figure it out. In other words, next week’s episode should be AWESOME.
But before they arrive there a lot of other business had been going down. For one, Damon helped Elena make chili for a potluck and everyone lost their shit. Her girlfriends nagged her about admitting she liked him (ie. they called her a whore) and good old Rick told Damon to step off a bit. My reaction to all this: Jesus. Remind me to never cook chili with anyone unless we’re engaged.
But not everyone was hating on Damon. Sheriff Forbes actually requested his services to compel her awful ex-husband/father of Caroline, Bill (Jack Coleman), to forget that Caroline is a vampire that he tried to torture and make human again. Damon tries his best but ultimately fails to compel Bill properly due to his well-trained brain or something like that.
They learn that it doesn’t work when the sleazebag shows up at the city’s secret council boasting that vervain should be put in the water supply. This chaps Damon’s ass so later on he attacks Bill (after temporarily killing Rick mind you) and in a surprising turn of events Caroline zips in to save her dad by fighting Damon. Its a pretty good little smackdown but Caroline ends up victorious! And as a token of his thanks Bill agrees to leave town though he still seems pretty sour about his little girl being a vampire. I’m guessing we’ll see him again soon.
And with everyone displeased with Damon’s behavior, imagine his luck when Katherine shows up at his door after swindling Elena’s magic necklace away from Bonnie. She offers to take Damon on a trip and he agrees. Where will they go? Chicago? Transylvania? Vegas?
I guess we’ll find out next week but until then post your predictions below!

Yeah. I’m not really feeling the whole Jeremy wanting to see his dead ex’s, but I’m willing to ride it out on this one although Jeremy is walking a tight line with this one.
And Katherine was some kind of bada@$, as always.
Great review!
