Veep Recap: Jolly Green Jizz Face

veep-1stimage-s2Things continued to go terribly for Vice President Selina Meyer on this week’s episode of HBO’s Veep. How bad did they go? Let us count the ways.

For starters, we’re really getting the sense that absolutely no one is happy with their current position in the Veep’s office. Sue is applying for new jobs, Gary is feeling put down, Mike and Dan are both bored, and Amy is painfully overworked. And Selina, well….Selina just can’t win.

Following last week’s successful rescue of the hostages, Selina’s team is asked to select a photo from the Situation Room during the event to be released to the public. They make their selection finding one that makes her look strong but when the photo is finally released it ends up being one that shows her looking at her cell phone as if she was uninterested. This ends up becoming an Internet meme with people editing her on her phone into other historical events. Her reaction when she realizes that Kent approved this particular photo for release? “I’m gonna stab him.”

Amy then has a serious sit-down with Selina to clue her into the general unhappiness of the office. Selina quickly solves the Sue wanting another job problem by offering her more money but finding out that Gary is unhappy clearly left her puzzled.”Gary’s not happy with me? Cuz I thought he’d still like me if I shot him in the face.” Amy then makes the suggestion that she should take Gary out for dinner as a sign of her appreciation. Selina reluctantly agrees and is even more mortified by the prospect when he asks to invite his girlfriend, Dana, along too.

veeps2ep4The dinner ends up becoming a lunch but no less awkward due to Dana making horrible jokes and talking about her job importing cheese. This escalate to a pretty big level of awful that pushes Selina to explode a little bit, but you honestly cannot blame her. I’d yell at Dana too.

There was one moment though when things were looking up for Selina. She had to perform a comedy act at a highly douchy DC event and does so by forcing Dan and Mike to write her a funny song about what it takes to get elected. It’s cheesy as hell but she kind of kills it and considers it a feather in her cap…that is until the horrible Jonah (who is referred to as Jolly Green Jizz Face at one in the episode) posts it online and causes an international fuss over a couple of lines in the song that mock Europe.

Now, we’ve seen Selina get mad before but the outburst that she unleashes on Jonah for this is quite possibly the best reaction to anything ever. There is screaming, throwing of papers, and best of all: she makes Air Force Two stop its taxi down the runway and has the Secret Service throw Jonah off of the plane. This is what bliss looks like, people.

Bliss also looks like the exchange between Sue and Amy concerning Amy’s workaholic lifestyle. I mean, any exchange that ends with someone saying “I wouldn’t want you to end up as a fat, neurotic freak” gets a gold star in my book.

It looks like next week’s episode could take us to Helsinki, Finland for a diplomatic effort so I can only imagine the offensive hilarity heading our way!

Favorite Vulgar Line of the Week: Amy: “I hope I don’t have a cat, because believe me, that poor fucker’s dead.”

Veep, Season 2, Episode 4: “The Vic Allen Dinner” (originally aired May 5, 2013)
