On June 6, 2013, the United Way of the National Capital Area (United Way NCA) takes crowdfunding to the next level by running a 24-hour online campaign beginning at 12:00 a.m. (ET) and ending at 11:59 p.m. (ET), Do More 24. Since we are pop culture gurus, we love most things that encourage crowdsourcing as a way to tell a story, get a point across, or in this case, raise money in our own communities. That is why we were excited to be asked by one of the nation’s top social media firms, MXM (formerly, New Media Strategies) and the United Way NCA to help promote their Do More 24 Campaign.
We know what you’re thinking: this is just another plea for donations by the United Way. Well it’s not. It’s something bigger. In fact, the United Way NCA is billing it as “the next generation of online giving.” It is not alone; some of its top sponsors, Wegmans Food Markets, PEPCO and Microsoft, agree (list of additional sponsors).
After watching the video below, we were compelled to do something we have never done before as movie, TV, and video game reviewers . . . we plan to turn off our TVs, skip our movie advance screenings and get involved with local charities by showing up and donating. We encourage you to Do More 24 on June 6th with us by showing up and donating too (domore24.org/events-list/).
