66th Primetime Emmys Broadcast Is Moved Up To August

Folks, we just heard from our friends over at The Hollywood Reporter (THR) that the 66th Primetime Emmys broadcast in 2014 is moved up to August.  (This has no affect on this year’s Emmys, which will still air as planned on Sept. 22 on CBS.)

THR reported that the move was necessary “to avoid a conflict with NBC’s Sunday Night Football,” (SNF).  Citing an unnamed source, THR further reported  the “TV Academy has decided on an Aug. 24 date but a rep for the Academy declined to comment.”

This seems to be par for the course for NBC whose turn it is to broadcast the show next year.  The last two times it was NBC’s turn — 2010 and 2006 — they moved the date up to August as well.

This will most likely be a relief to publicist, actors, and producers because it moves the Emmys out of competition with the fall TV season and film festivals and into the end of the summer — usually a less competitive time.

Follow the Numbers

Why would they move it up for SNF?  Easy, it is one of NBC’s biggest boons in terms of viewership for NBC.  In fact, during the 2012 – 2013 season, SNF was the most watched primetime show, according to Nielsen Ratings. (See below)
