After a season-long buildup toward the biggest, ahem, “Face Off” in Breaking Bad history, Walt’s continuing slide into darker territory reached shocking new levels in Sunday’s stunning finale when the most jaw-dropping event in the entire episode didn’t involve Gus or his grisly, highly-anticipated demise. The undercurrent of the series as a whole has been faithfully dedicated to the transformation of mild-mannered Walter White into cold-blooded drug lord Heisenberg, but Season Four’s potboiling narrative marked the darkest depths of Walt’s journey yet, somehow usurping what was arguably meant to be the piece de resistance to this year’s enthralling sequence of events.
